Kandy - CH should provide fine rugby today

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN Kandy Sports Corr.

It should be red hot rugby at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium up in the hills when two top teams CH & FC and Kandy Sports Club clash in their Caltex League 'A' Division rugby tournament match to be played today June 15th.

Both teams have remained unbeaten so far and unless the match ends in a draw, one of the teams is certain to lose its unbeaten tag and drop down the table and diminish its chances of winning the local club rugby plum.

Last CH & FC scored a thrilling 22-14 win over the CR & FC and Kandy has to put up a fine second half rally to pip the Havelocks Sports Club in a 26-13 win. But up at Nittawela playing before their home crowd and in under familiar conditions, they could be a tough proposition.

Kandy have todate played dix matches and won all and head the table with 28.4 points and CH & FC too have played a similar number of matches and have 26.9 points. Thus a win for Kandy could further consolidate their chances of retaining the league title for another year.

A loss for CH & FC could result in their having to put up big fight in the second round matches if they are to have and go at the title.

Kandy Sports Club is playing well at the moment and perhaps the heat of Colombo in their maiden outing there could have had a telling effect on them in their match against Havelocks but having got themselves acquainted to the conditions they settled down to play better rugby in the second half to post the win.

Kandy Sports have still not named their final team but they are expected to be at full strength at this crucial game which they must win at any cost.

KANDY SC (from) Jeewa Galgamuwa, Mohammed Bukshy, Saranath Hettiarachchi/Dunstan de Silva, Asoka Jayasena, Pradeep Basanayake, Bean Wijesinghe, Dilip Selvan, Kapila Silva, Tavita Tulagese, Kavinda Jayasena, Amjad Buksh, Nilfer Ibrahim, Radhika Hettiarachchi, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Ifeta Tema, Sajith Mallikarachchi, Nalaka Weerakoddy, Malith Silva, Neranjan Ranasinghe, Chamara Withanage, Chaminda Yapa, Udaya Hettiarachchi, Duminda Pullukuttiarachchi and Sameera Silva (Manager Saman Kotalawela).
