To many young Old Thomians, the late Warden De Alwis was like a father looking after the academical interest and growing interest on the sports field as well. He had a long stint of 15 years as Warden of the College. He was greatly responsible for the progress made by the school in the classroom and sports field as well. He was also responsible in the infrastructure of the college, as during his term of office additional buildings came up to accommodate the growing population of the school and also improved the landscape of the school area. On the sports front, he was at one time President of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association from 1989 to February 1998 and during these years he also had the time to have a careful look at the progress of S. Thomas' in cricket, rugby football and water sports and speaking of water sports, the improvements done to the swimming pool was solely due to the efforts of Warden De. Alwis. He was also instrumental in getting an Indoor Sports Complex, Indoor Cricket Nets and was also responsible in taking a S. Thomas' College cricket team to the U.K. He was an old boy of the school and before he made a second entry to the school as a schoolmaster under late Warden Canon R.S. de Saram and then as Warden of the School on January 1983 till June 1989, he was a leading personality in the legal profession - B.A. (Cey), LL.B (Cey), LL.M (Colombo-Sri Lanka) and held responsible positions in the Attorney General's and Legal Draftman's Departments. However, he forsake the high positions in the legal profession to serve S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia - the school he loved so dearly and S. Thomas' was greatly benefitted by his decision. He leaves behind his wife Sweneetha, son Nimantha and daughter Surani. - (A.C. de S) |
