Twenty one swimmers selected, more to follow for dual against Tamil Nadu

Twenty one young swimmers in three age groups, both boys and girls under-7, under-8 and under-9 gained selection to swim at the Sri Lanka Schools vs Tamil Nadu aquatic dual in Chennai, July 12-13 after reaching the set timing at the special trail conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association held at S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia swimming pool yesterday.

Thirty events in four strokes plus the 4x25 individual medley events were worked off in the three age categories.

Ali Isaphani of Royal in the boys under-8, Sachin Kumarajeewa of St. Joseph's College in the boys under-7, performed best to win all three events while Shehani Amarasena of Mahamaya College, Kandy in the girls under-8, Akshaya Kumarajeewa of St. Joseph's College in the boys under-7, Sabrina Ahamat of Methodist College in the girls under-7, Sunethra Wijeratne of Mahamaya College, Kandy in the girls under-9 and Kanitha Jayanga Munasinghe of Prince of Wales College in the boys under-9 won two events each.

The swimmers that qualified: Boys under-7 - Akshaya Kumarajeewa (St. Joseph's), Sachin Kumarajeewa (St. Joseph's), Girls under-7 - Kasuni Dissanayake (Sirimavo Bandaranayake BV), Sabrina Ahamat (Methodist College), Kiara Fernando (Colombo International School), Boys under-8 - Avinash Weerasinghe (St. Joseph's), Ali Isaphani (Royal), S. Gunaratne (S. Thomas'), Girls under-8 - Saleeta Abeyratne (Stafford IS), Shehani Amarasena (Mahamaya College), Tharanga Mannapperuma (Mahamaya College), Rashmika Gunasekera (St. Bridget's Convent).

Boys under-9 - Revan Fernandez (St. Peter's College), D. N. de Mel (S. Thomas' College), C. Salgadu (Ananda), Kanitha Jayanga Munasinghe (Prince of Wales), Girls under-9 - Sunethra Wijeratne (Mahamaya College), Parami Ratnayake (Mahamaya College), Dharini Spendewinde (Ladies College), Nethmi Mallawarachchi (St. Bridget's Convent).

Sri Lanka Schools swimmers both boys and girls will also compete in the under-13, under-15, under-17, under-19 and open both boys and girls in Chennai.

Ms Ranjani de Fonseka, the Secretary Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association said the names of swimmers selected in those age groups will be announced on Wednesday after finalising the results of the NAASU conducted Age Group Swimming Championships concluded on June 7 at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool.

The swimmers selected for the Chennai trip have to find their own finances for air travel Colombo to Chennai and back.

The Tamil Nadu swimmers for the aquatic dual will be from Justice P. S. Kailasam Medical and Educational Research Foundation.

SLSASA will send over 100 swimmers for the dual.
