Navy organisers fun-filled open two-kilometre sea swim June 21 by Leslie Fernando Sri Lanka Navy Sport Board has finalised arrangements to hold the inaugural Open National 2-kilometre sea swim at Trincomalee on Saturday June 21. The historic sea swim will be held at the Sandy Bay, Trincomalee Harbour. The sea swim is organised in association with the National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (NAASU). The swim will start at 4.00 p.m. The swim will from Sandy Bay, one kilometre to the sea and back to the beach. Over 200 swimmers are expected to participate in men's, women's, juvenile boys and girls categories. The participants represent, clubs and schools, three armed services and the Sri Lanka Police. Captain S.M.A. Jayantha Perera, Sri Lanka Navy Media Coordinator said that the Sri Lanka Navy Sport Board standing orders permits to conduct the 2-km sea swim at Trincomalee as an antecedent to inter-command tournament. Currently, Sri Lanka Navy swimming is on a progressive process and the Navy actively competes in all national level competitions. Captain Perera further said that organising a nationwide swimming competition in Trincomalee would be an ideal opportunity to promote the image of Sri Lanka Navy, while enhancing strength of national unity through friendly and fortitude competitions between swimmers from all parts of the island. The Navy will continue with the event in the years to come and make it an annual event. "We have already obtained sponsorship from industrial establishments like Prima and Mitsui. Nilwala Beach Hotel and Club Oceanic on the advice of Tourist Board together with Ceylon Cold Stores will also be supporting this historical event in a big way," said Capt. Perera and added that NAASU officials will be involved in conducting the event. Free accommodation for competitors will be provided at Tissa Vidyalaya. NAASU officials will be provided accommodation and meals at the Naval Dockyard. Equipment from Navy IPC and FGD's from area will be used for officiating and safety of swimmers during the meet. Medical and emergency assistance Naval too will be provided. The Navy will also provide musical entertainment during the prize giving and reception. Challenge trophies will be presented to men's and women's champions and champions in juvenile boys, juvenile girls, oldest swimmer, youngest swimmer boys and girls, inter-club champions men's team championships, women's team championships inter-services, inter-command (Navy) championships. Prior to the sea swim, windsurfing competition also organised by the Sri Lanka Navy in association with Yachting Association will take place. Bentota Windsurfing Club will be in charge of the event. The overall champions will be presented with prizes. Major General Asoka K. Jayawardena, Governor, Northern-Eastern Province will be the chief guest. Rear Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Commander Eastern Naval Area and the President of National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union (NAASU) together with the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Board will also be present at the awards ceremony. |
