Four Lankan disabled soldiers for French Open Wheelchair Tennis C'ships by LAL GUNESEKERA Four Sri Lankan disabled soldiers have once again been selected to represent the country at the French Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship to be staged in France from July 1 to 6. This is part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The four soldiers are R. M. U. Rajakaruna, J. B. Silva, T. S. P. D. K. Jayatissa and N. W. Balasuriya who will be accompanied by Major General C. I. Ranaweera. Last year (2002), too these soldiers had an outstanding tournament in Thailand. The racquets for these players were donated by Babalot, a popular sports manufacturer in France, whose local representative is Ganendran Subramaniam of R & G Sports. The wheelchairs were manufactured locally, thanks to Manthirannan, Managing Director of East West Marketing (Pvt) Limited. Major General Ranaweera thanked the organisations and individuals who helped these soldiers who are disabled today because of trying to defend their motherland and are looking further for sponsors to help them with the return air tickets and finances needed for their stay in France. The Army thanked the President of the SLTA, Suresh Subramaniam, who was responsible for providing all the facilities, including coaching of these wheelchair tennis players. The ITF has included Sri Lanka in its Silver Development Fund created to lend a hand to countries showing promise in Wheelchair Tennis. |
