Mitsubishi scores for Cricket Board

by Pelham Juriansz

United Motors Lanka Ltd (UMLL) has become the Official Transport Provider for the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL).

United Motors agreed to sponsor the vehicle requirements of the BCCSL and provide Mitsubishi vehicles to Board officials. They will get the Mitsubishi Lancer 2003, which was launched last month.

Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu and Mutthiah Muralitharan have signed up with TVS (Lanka) Ltd, a company in the United Motors Group, to act as ambassadors for TVS motorcycles in Sri Lanka.

According to Anil Wijesinghe, Managing Director and CEO of UMLL, the deal was put through in Dambulla during the tri-nations series between Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Pakistan.

This is the first time that a TVS product was gifted in a cricket series in Sri Lanka and the company plans to maintain this association.

In February this year, UMLL formed a joint venture with TVS India to distribute TVS motorcycles and scooters in Sri Lanka. UMLL will acquire a 50 per cent interest in TVS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, which is a long-standing subsidiary of TVS Group, India.

This bike from TVS has won the National Award 2002 for 'Successful Commercialisation of Indigenous Technology' from India's Technology Development Board, Ministry of Science and Technology.

United Motors also announced the sponsorship of four of Sri Lanka's leading racing drivers. Accordingly, Dinesh Deheragoda, Nishan Weerasooriya, Riyaz Farook and Gamini Nelson will all drive Mitsubishi vehicles.

In addition to spare parts outlets at Hyde Park and Orugodawatte, UMLL also opened branches in Panchikawatte, Nugegoda, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya. During the last financial year, United Motors achieved a turnover of Rs 2.7 billion, an increase of 73 per cent over the previous year.
