Ananda emphatic 20/0 win over Dharmaraja by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr. Ananda College, Colombo score an emphatic 20 points (2 goals, 2 penalties) to nil win over Dharmaraja College in their schools Milo Cup rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday. At half-time Anandians were ahead leading 13-0. Rajans have to blame themselves for this defeat as they failed to make use of the opportunities which came their way especially in the first half through some lethargic play. Least they could have done was to have reduced the margin of defeat. After conceding a 0-13 lead in the first half Rajans defended well to restrict the Anandians from scoring till the final minute of play. Anandians opened scoring through a penalty fired by stand-off Nipuna Vimukthi. Midway in this half Anandians moved the ball well for centre Nadeesh Chathuranga to cover some distance before passing the ball to winger Chamara Chathuranga who planted the try. Stand off Nipuna Vimukthi added the extra points. Shortly before the lemons stand off Nipuna Vimukthi fired another 30 metre penalty for the Anandians to lead 13-0. One expected the Rajans to stage a fight-back in the second half but though they defended well but there was no punch in their attack. Twice they came close to scoring but found the Anandians defence too strong to breach. It was in the final minute of play that the Ananda's forwards made a last ditch effort and took play deep inside Rajans territory and with second phase play taking over winger Dayan Dhanushka touched down mid right. Stand-off Nipuna Vimukthi made no mistake with the conversion. This was Rajans' fourth successive defeat this season. Aruna Rankothge refereed. |
