Twelve teams in Upcountry clubs rugby tourney by KANDY SPORTS CORR There will be more entertaining rugby for rugby fans in the hill capital when the Provincial Rugby League tournament organised by the Central Province Rugby Football for Upcountry Clubs gets under way this week. The Secretary of the Central Province Rugby Football Union former Kandy SC and Sri Lanka flanker and Trinity Rugby 'Lion' Iswan Omar said that a total of 12 teams have entered this tournament and the matches will be played on week days due to non-availability of grounds. Two of the oldest rugby playing clubs in the island Dimbula and Dickoya will also scrum down with clubs from Mawilmada, Polgolla, Pilimatalawa, Nuwara Eliya, Peradeniya University. New comers to the league tournament will be Old Anthonians Rugby Sports Club which has entered a formidable side and will include young old boys and former ruggerites from the Kandy Sports Club. The Presidents of the Old Antonians Rugby Club C. P. P. Raj, a sports promoter is busy gathering the best available resources and he is assisted by former greats Priyantha Ekanayake, Lasantha Wijesuriya, Maurice Joachim with all three captaining Kandy SC, Rohan Daulagala, Kasi Suresh and Asanka Niyarepola. The Central Province Ruby Football Union under the Presidency of Trevor Nugawela has drawn several programmes to develop and promote rugby among schools and clubs in the Central Province. The Secretary of the CPRFU Iswan Omar said that Kandy will host all the matches of the Provincial Tournament which will be played daily. This will be in addition to the school rugby matches and the 'A' division matches played by the triple champions Kandy Sports Club and Kandy Youths Sports Club. Thus it will be rugby all through the week in the hill capital. |
