India, China should learn from history - Vajpayee BEIJING, Saturday (Reuters) India and China should draw on lessons of the past to avoid tensions in future, Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said in an interview broadcast on Saturday, a day before he arrives in China on a six-day visit. "We should take history as a mirror instead of being burdened by it," state CCTV quoted Vajpayee as saying before the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the world's most populous country in a decade. Relations between the neighbours soured after they fought a bloody border war in 1962. India, which lost the war, has long accused China of supporting Pakistan, its traditional rival. "The establishment of a strong and lasting partnership between India and China will be helpful for the world's peace and stability," CCTV quoted Vajpayee as saying. India hopes to resolve long-standing border issues with China and strengthen trade relations during the trip, CCTV said. |
