Behaviour of two ministers condemned The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) of Sri Lanka has condemned the behaviour of Ministers Mahinda Wijesekera and A. Thondaman and requested President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickeremesinghe to take stern disciplinary action against them. The OPA in a letter addressed to the President and the Prime Minister, has stated that a unanimous decision had been taken at the Association's General Forum on June 23 to ask the two leaders to take stern action against the two ministers, for their abusive behaviour. Mahinda Wijesekera, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the letter states, had intimidated, insulted and chased out of his office the Secretary to the Minister, for refusing to carry out an allegedly illegal order. The OPA has said that the incident is a serious breach and violation of the independence of the Public Service. With reference to A. Thondaman, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Development, the OPA has denounced his strike action protesting the Cabinet decision to proceed with the Upper Kotmale project, and stated that the action of the Minister is a direct violation of the collective responsibility enshrined in Article 43 of the Constitution. |
