Young Director of the Year award to Kishu Gomes
The recipient of this award was Kishu Gomes, who created history by being elected to head two US multinational companies operating in Sri Lanka, Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited and Caltex Ceylon Limited, as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, in 2001 at the age of 37 years. He is the first and the youngest Sri Lankan to do so as this position has traditionally been held by expatriates since the company's inception in 1994. He was also elected to the Asia Pacific Lubricants Leadership Team encompassing all countries within the region; he is currently the only Asian in the team. Gomes began his career at Coca-Cola and worked his way through positions of increasing responsibility during his 11-year tenure. He joined the beverage company at a time when the company was an underdog in the industry with around a 35 per cent market share, blooming into becoming the industry leader with a 65 per cent share. In 1997, he joined Caltex as National Sales Manager and soon climbed up the ladder through hard work, dedication and unobtrusive leadership. Gomes is the current Senior Vice Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), UK, Sri Lanka Branch and the CIM nominee for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants' Advertising and Promotional Committee, providing marketing expertise to the accounting body. He was elected President of the American Chamber of Commerce at its recent AGM after serving on the Chamber's Board for three years as Director and Secretary. Currently reading for his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Leicester, his scholastic profile also boasts a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing from the CIM, UK. Gomes was also placed among the top three marketers in Sri Lanka at the inaugural Marketers Awards conducted by CIM UK, local branch. |
