Charges faced by suspended UNPers by don Asoka Wijewardena The Disciplinary Committee of the United National Party last week suspended the party membership of Colombo Municipal Councillor Roy Bogahawatte for abusing his position and getting his lady secretary to pose as his wife and taking her on a foreign jaunt on a tampered passport. The Committee will decide whether Bogahawatte should be expelled from the party, after investigation into his action is completed. Bogahawatte is one of five UNPers, being subjected to disciplinary action by the Disciplinary Committee, set up specifically to flush out miscreants and instill in its members a proper code of behaviour that is in keeping with the party image. The others suspended from the party, and facing possible expulsion include Thyagaratne de Alwis, Chairman of the Wattala Pardesiya Sabha, alleged to have orchestrated the murder of Sunil Mendis, Nimal Chandena, vice-chairman of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council allegedly involved in the assassination of the Council Chairman, A.H.D. Ravindra, vice-chairman Bentota Pradesiya Sabha, alleged to have been involved in a murder and Christie Caldera, Ja-ela Urban Council Member, for alleged misbehaviour at the Ragama Hospital. |
