S. Thomas' beat St. Anthony's easily 24-nil by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia beat St. Anthony's College 'blue and black' to score an emphatic 24 points (3 goals, 1 penalty) to nil win in their Milo Cup 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half-time Thomians led 10-0. The Antonians put up a pathetic display, their defence appeared suspect and gave the Thomians far too many liberties to run with the ball and three of them ended in tries under the post. The moment Antonian skipper and prop Suranga Swarnatillake limped off due to injury, the writing was on the walls for the eagles as these was no second phase play, and the side appeared to be disjointed and lost the grip which they gained easily in the game. The game started off on a terrific note and the first 20 minutes appeared to evenly contested with both teams striving hard to score. Thomians set the scoreboard moving through penalty fired by prop Isuru de Silva. The Antonians had a chance of equalising but full back Wijesiri's penalty kick at goal hit the posts and rebounded back to play. The Antonians also had the misfortune of losing skipper Suranga Swarnatilleke through injury in the first half. Just before the short blast Thomians won a scrum inside Antonian '22' and the nippy scrum half Dinesh Siriwardena slung a pass to stand off Wasim Thajudeen who scored under the post and prop Isuru de Silva added the extra points. But almost immediately after resumption Thomians exploded into action and scrum half Dinesh Siriwardena collecting a pass from No. 8 Namal Rajapakse sprinted away to score under the post. Prop Isuru de Silva had no difficulty in adding the extra points. Thomians 17-0. In the 10th minute of this half, the Thomians further increased their score when No. 8 Namal Rajapakse who had an excellent game covered some distance before giving over to flanker Dayan Jansz who slipped tackles and touched down under the post. Isuru de Silva obliged with the conversion for Thomians to take a commanding 24-0 lead. The Antonians made a spirited fight back in the last quarter of the game but the Thomians defence held and prevented them from scoring. Aruna Rankothge refereed. Antonians won the junior game 13-10. |
