Professor Visvanathan's funeral today Aquatic sports in Sri Lanka lost a great supporter and benefactor with the death of Professor T. Visvanathan. His funeral (cremation) will take place today at the General Cemetery, Kanatte at 9 am with Cortege leaving residence - 88, Horton Place, Colombo 7 at 8.45 am. Professor Visvanathan was President of the then controlling body of aquatic sports - Ceylon Amateur Swimming Association for some time and during those years swimming thrived as there were good swimmers and they had the backing of knowledgeable officials to back them and get the best out of them. During the seventies there were not many sponsors for sports and I know for certain that the Ceylon Amateur Swimming Association (CASA) was not sponsored in all their activities. There were sponsors at random for various meets, but in time of need, the CASA found a ready sponsor in Professor T. Visvanathan, who used to dig into his own pocket to fork out funds necessary for any trip abroad so that the swimmers concerned would not be deprived of participating abroad. With a fatherly figure overlooking swimming, quite naturally the sport prospered and there were fine performances by the local swimmers both here and abroad. There was the Indo-Ceylon Swimming Meet those days and this meet really 'caught on' with the enthusiasm shown by the officials spearheaded by Professor T. Visvanathan who spared no pains in getting the best out of the swimmers and he also looked after the swimmers well. Professor Visvanathan leaves behind his wife Jean, daughters Shanthi, Shyamala, Shirani, Savithri and Gowri and sons Shanthikumar, Dilip and the late Sivakumar. (A.C. de S.) |
