One tourney of Indian 'pro' Golf Circuit at RCGC Sept 22 to 29 by LAL GUNESEKERA One tournament of the Indian Professional Golf Circuit is now scheduled to be staged at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) from September 22 to 29, where over 100 professionals from India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will vie for honours. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) told the Sunday Observer that they need to find Rs. 5 million sponsorship money and have roped in one of its former Presidents, Ana Punchihewa, who headed the Sri Lanka Cricket Board sometime back too, to assist them. He further disclosed that Digraj Singh, a former Sri Lanka amateur champion, who is the Director of Sales and Marketing of Tiger Sports, who are organising the Indian Pro Circuit, will be in Colombo next week to make a presentation to potential sponsors. He said that "things look fairly good", and that the SLGU have spoken to a few would be sponsors, and hopes that SriLankan Airlines too, will get themselves involved in this event, where wide coverage will be given on Ten Sports plus ESPN, while Sri Lanka's Rupavahini and ITN too are being tapped for coverage. Earlier, Brendon D'Souza, another top Indian player, who has played regularly at the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship, was in Colombo and held discussions with SLGU on staging one leg of the Indian Pro Circuit in Colombo. The SLGU spokesman also disclosed that the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship has been re-scheduled for November 22 to 29 due to the heavy programme in October and is to be worked off at Nuwara-Eliya. The format has been changed for the first time - it will be a stroke-play and not match-play event as in previous years. The SLGU are hopeful that players from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Malaysia, Hong Kong and United Kingdom will respond to the invitations to compete in Colombo. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will send four players for the Pakistan Open Amateur Championship to be staged in Islamabad in October, while a few juniors are to be sent for the Hong Kong Junior Amateur Championship on August 13 and 14. The RCGC Championship is also scheduled to be worked off on August 9, 10, 16 and 17, while the Pin Fernando Trophy event is scheduled for July 19 and 20 and will be on a stableford format this year. |
