Five-year plan to develop golf in Sri Lanka A five-year plan of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) on a professional level is to be put into operation "very soon" and this includes a piece of land for a "driving range" and headquarters complex too for the SLGU. A spokesman for the SLGU told the Sunday Observer that a lot of changes will take place in the SLGU within the next month or two, and that it expects even financial assistance from Royal and Ancient (R & A) for this project. The SLGU also will get down a top foreign coach twice a year. He further said that the SLGU hopes to extend the junior tournaments to include Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) and Victoria Golf Club as well in addition to the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC). He further disclosed that a project is already under way in Bentota to establish a 18-hole golf course and once this is completed, Sri Lanka, will have four courses - RCGC, NEGC and Victoria GC. The SLGU spokesman said that plans are under way and will be finalised within the next couple of weeks for hosting of one-leg of the Indian Pro Circuit at the RCGC in September. He said: "Digraj Singh of Tiger Sports Marketing of India was in Colombo for three days last week and held discussions with SLGU and various others. The SLGU needs at least Rs. 6 million to conduct this event and are hopeful that the money will be raised with the help of international companies based in Sri Lanka, hotels etc." About 80 top 'pros' from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia and Sri Lanka are scheduled to play, involving about 80 players. He said that Sahara Airlines of India offer 50 per cent discount on internal travel for players within India for the Indian 'Pro' Circuit, and hopes that SriLankan Airlines, too, will chip in with some sort of relief for these golfers to travel to Colombo from Chennai. He said that the SLGU are yet having discussions with SriLankan Airlines on this matter and that both ESPN and Ten Sports are giving live telecasts of the event and Sri Lanka's Rupavahini Corporation too, are being approached on this matter.
