EXCEL invests Rs 1.5 billion in entertainment complex

by Pelham Juriansz

Excel Global Holdings, the owning company of Millennium Development Ltd will invest Rs 1.5 billion in the near future to build Colombo's only entertainment complex.

During the first phase of the project, which is over the next 10 months Excel will infuse Rs 400 million to build a Water Park, a multiplex cinema, simulation rides, shops, restaurants and also improve the existing facilities.

Ravi Wijenathan,CEO, Millennium Development(Pvt)Ltd in an exclusive interview with the "Sunday Observer" said that the water park, which will be situated in the former Arena Complex, encompassing 72,000 sq ft,with three floors and a basement for 220 cars to be parked, will be the main attraction. "The Wonderworld, pool parlours, electronic games arcade, food court and pro kart centre are to be refurbished and in fact work has already begun on the Food Court."

The water park will include different types of attractions such as Wave Pools, Master Blaster, Water bumper boats, Pendulum slides(in case you are wondering, these are the names of the different types of rides at the Water Park). In addition there will be a kiddies pool.

All these concepts are ever present in India and these are referred to as Leisure Sports as opposed to Adventure Sports.

Manager -Business Development, Ms.Dharshini Varma has many plans to develop this Park and include Archery, and a movie theatre. "The main intention is to create a family atmosphere" said Varma.

The former Operations Manager of the Park, Harpo Gooneratne, had ideas of having a shopping mall and Roller skating and roller blading etc and a Cyber Cafe run by East West. The Bowling Alley is popular amongst expatriates especially the Filipinos who spent most of their time there. Since the Bowling Alley is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka the management wishes to create a new atmosphere.

There will be live bands on Fridays and especially on Weekends, and an addition is that on Fridays the kids can come along with their Parents and other siblings and sing along at the Family Karoake night and display their talents. The Holiday season is an ideal opportunity for these kids to get together and have fun. On Wednesdays a calypso band will be in attendance and there will also be the usual prokart racing.

Millennium Development(Pvt) Ltd, has bought over the assets of Y2k bowling Alley.

This deal was signed on August 1 by the Apparel giant Excel Global Holdings who earlier put through the deal for purchasing the Millennium Park in May this year. One of the features of the deal will be refurbishment of the ever popular bowling alley which was started four years ago.

Hitherto the Bowling Alley had a style of its own with all the embellishment and fanfare and balloons decorating its Anniversary celebrations with lavish competitions.

Many celebrities spend their time at the bowling alley which is a relaxing experience and many "stars of yesteryear" and so many others like to relax with their families at the Alley. Numerous school competitions have been held there and it is a popular sport amongst the young and the not so young. Initially, the Bowling Alley itself cost around Rs 30 million to construct. The Food Court has been extensively developed and even Pizza Hut might move in there, according to the Management, displacing Domino's. The "An Pub" has also been bought over by Millennium Development(Pvt) Ltd.
