Lanka's gems and jewellery showcased through web portal

by Elmo Leonard

Foreign gem and jewellery buyers can now keep abreast of the happenings in Sri Lanka's gem and jewellery industry through a web portal. "It is timely, as the nation braces itself to move into the higher end of the global jewellery market, while increasing its production of fine gemstones," Lanka Jewels.Com Manager, Pubudu Alahakoon said.

The web portal is a non-profit initiative managed by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board representing the government and the National Gem and Jewellery Association, which embodies the private sector.

Lanka Jewels is the first web portal presenting a consolidated image of Sri Lanka's gem and jewellery industry. It is intended as the main gateway to all information overseas inquirers require about the industry and the quality of gems and jewellery offered by Sri Lanka.

The gem section contains information on the physical properties, history and allure of over 50 varieties of gems found in Sri Lanka. The explorer could read about the largest blue sapphire ever found, the 466-carat 'Blue Giant of the Orient', and the over 500-carat cat's eye, Hope.

In the jewellery section, examples of local craftsmanship are given in the jewellery gallery, from engagement settings to elaborate necklaces in gold and platinum encrusted with premium sapphires, diamonds and an array of coloured gemstones.

Through a directory search, you could find the jewellery or gem dealer you require. The information section can be accessed for tips before purchasing gems or jewellery from Sri Lanka, Alahakoon pointed out. "You could learn about the Mohs Scale, the 4Cs of evaluating diamond quality and how to care for your jewellery. The section on the history of precious stones will take you on a journey to the pre-Cambrian age, dating back to over 570 million years," he said. Alahakoon called those involved in the trade to register at www.lankajewels.com. and make use of its special features, which include product catalogues. The products of Sri Lanka's leading jewellery suppliers and gem dealers are showcased in the portal.
