Local apparel exporters for largest trade show

Eleven Sri Lankan apparel exporters will participate at the largest apparel trade show, Magic, to be held from August 25 to 28 in Las Vegas, USA.

The biannual show attracts over 85,000 buyers with over 7,000 booths covering 800,000 square feet of floor space. This show has the selling power of over 64 billion dollars and attracts the top 37 buying clusters in North America, said President, SUMMIT Corporation and local representative for Magic, Hiran Jayasinghe.

He said over 100,000 buyers from 110 countries, 7,000 exhibitors and 33,000 departmental stores will take part in this year's event. The special events at the show include fashion shows, free educational seminars and a website.

The fashion show will be in three segments where the latest fashions and designs in men's, women's and children's clothing will be on display. The seminars will discuss the latest industry topics and concerns by leading names in the business.

Jayasinghe said 93 per cent of US garment suppliers buy their products through contacts made at the show. Around 52 per cent of the buyers participating are vice presidents of their companies and 93 per cent of them look for new buyers.

"China, realising the importance of this event, increased its participation on each occasion. Last February, it took three booths, but last August, increased its participation to 108. This year China has already reserved 300 booths and is expected to take 1,000 booths for the next February exhibition," he said.

Participation from the SAARC region too has increased with India, Bangladesh and Nepal reserving 58, 11 and five booths respectively. Bangladesh took part in the previous exhibition for the first time and secured deals worth one million US dollars.

"During the last exhibition in February, trade deals worth over US$ 60 billion were sealed. Even exporters who visited the exhibition secured orders," said Jayasinghe.
