LTTE calls for AAT centres in Kilinochchi, Jaffna

by Elmo Leonard

The LTTE has requested the Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AAT) to open training centres in Kilinochchi and Jaffna, AAT's Chief Executive Officer, Tishanga Kumarasinghe told a media briefing.

AAT has 30 registered training institutions spread through most districts of the country and 13,000 students. During 2002, 12,000 students sat the three stages of AAT examinations, which are conducted in three languages. Currently, 80 per cent of AAT students passing out utilise the Sinhala medium. Deputy Minister of Finance Bandula Gunawardena envisages AAT training centres in every district.

Most students who pass the second stage of the examination are assured employment. On completion of the third stage, which includes practical training, the professional qualification MAAT is acquired. MAAT-qualified students can join the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and Institute of Chartered Accountants Sri Lanka studies or enter universities in Sri Lanka, the UK and Australia for parallel studies, AAT's Director - Education and Training Herman Perera said. An Asian Development Bank study in 1986 showed a dearth of accounting technicians in Sri Lanka and AAT was set up to rectify this problem.

To date, 22,376 students have completed the first stage of AAT studies and 15,082, the second stage. Many AAT qualified persons work overseas; most of them are employed in the Middle East while many others have migrated to English-speaking countries, Jayasinghe said.

The multi-storey AAT building was commissioned last year at a cost of Rs 50 million, largely through the efforts of AAT past president, Lakshman Watawala. Another floor is to be added to the building to allow more training facilities.

AAT Sri Lanka is an associate member of the International Federation of Accountants and the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants, AAT President, Asoka Jayasinghe said.
