Teledrama revolving around nuclear war

Sumithra Rahubaddhe's first directional effort 'Sara', deals with a theme that is new to the Sinhala teledrama field.

Co directed by Sudath Devapriya and Sumithra Rahubaddhe, the 25 episode series was shot totally on location in New Zealand with a very popular and professional cast from Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

The story in 'Sara' revolves round a nuclear war, depicting the trauma, the conflicts and agony faced by a family, trapped in their basement room. Expecting their father to survive somewhere, the three children and the young mother grapple each others simmering emotions, trying to save on scarce food and other essentials needed for their daily trapped life.

Their father, Carl trapped in a nuclear shelter tries to get out from the bunker, but the international law of emergency does not allow him to come out. When he managed to escape from the bunker after 17 years, with his daughter by a scientist in the bunker called Lisa, he sees the damage that occurred in his village and to his own family.

The story brings to light the savage and brutal effects of man made war. It depicts the ruthlessness of inhumanity that destroys the future of civilizations. War, it cries out, in whatever form is devastating and needs to be condemned in the name of humanity. It seeks a peaceful future through human tolerance. Also the theme speaks about the motherly love and a growing relationship between a stepdaughter and a stepmother.

The locations present the scenic beauty of New Zealand, one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

The main artists from Sri Lanka are Dulika Marapona, Ama Wijesekera, Duneeshya Gunasekera and Keerthi Pasquel.

There are three main artists from New Zealand who are very popular in NZ. The main actor is Benjamin Micheal, Mr. NZ in 1999 and an actor in Shortland Street. Anasthasia Smirnova is a Rusian actress who is studying for her PhD in Film and Television. Alex Lee is also a popular professional actor in NZ.

It is hoped that the story which brings out a compelling discourse on the devastating effects of a war in modern society, would provoke a healthy discussion on present day Sri Lankan society, and the anticipated negotiated settlement of our own ethnic war that had similar breaches in human morals and living.
