by Chamikara Weerasinghe

The cover of Chamin Warnakula’s VCD on Hatha Yoga

AVCD on Yoga and meditation, 'Hatha Yoga for a Peaceful Mind and a Healthy Body', has been produced by Chamin Warnakula, Indian-trained senior Sri Lankan Yoga Instructor. It will be released on August 17 at Suwamadhu Ayurveda Sethmaga Yoga Nikhethana) at No.16, Suramya Mawatha, Wattegedera, Maharagama at 3 pm.

One hundred students will be recruited for Yoga training programmes free of charge on this day to coincide with this event, the organisers of the event said.

Chamin Warnakula holds a high degree in Yoga from Patna University in India, and a diploma in Healing and Meditation in Hydrawa in India. He currently conducts courses in Yoga asanas (sittings) and meditation for more than 5,000 at YMBA, Battaramulla; Lions Club (Wettasinghe Hall), Parliament Road; and Wattegedara, Maharagama. He has successfully completed his thousandth Yoga presentation for ITN's programme, Pahan Piyasa.

"The VCD is first of its kind in Sri Lanka covering all aspects of Yoga," he claims. The VCD demonstrates 36 Yoga-asanas with full instructions on how one should perform them with correct breathing techniques. It also includes methods of internal body cleansing used in Yoga for development of health."

The VCD is made with the aim of helping students of Yoga, especially those who practise Yoga in the wilderness without proper understanding of the subject, to correct their postures and breathing techniques.

"Spiritual aspects of Yoga and its tradition are explained on the VCD. The presentation of asanas starts with ancient surya namaskar (sun salutation) according to the ancient Yoga tradition," Warnakula said. He speaks on the VCD about what asanas should be eliminated from practice by persons suffering from various ailments, such as blood pressure, palpitations of the heart, hernia, spondylitis, lower back pain and other diseases. He also explains and demonstrates some asanas he says are beneficial in healing these ailments.

Warnakula had referred to all the available video material on Yoga before setting out to produce this VCD.

His advice to those starting out on yoga: "There is an order in everything. I have given the order in which the Yoga postures should be practised by followers. I advise the students not to overstrain their bodies when performing these postures as they are performed by the experts. Achieving yogic postures is done gradually. They cannot be achieved overnight."

Chamin could be contacted for more details on Tel: 562421, 850605 and 0777-960545.
