Mercedes-Benz pageant - Colourful event of the year by Pelham Juriansz The 12-year-old Mercedes Benz Club held their seventh " Mercedes Benz Pageant" at the BMICH on Sunday, August 3. The event which was open to Benz owners attracted over 250 to 300 owners and each and every participant had a chance of winning in the various categories. The categories were as follows: Oldest Mercedes Benz on show, Best maintained cars (for each category), First Lady driver, Car that has travelled from the longest distance, Longest ownership, Youngest owner, Largest fleet owner, Oldest Owner's Driving Licence, Best looking Mercedes Benz in the old and new category and many more," elaborated Welagedara. The event was organised by the "Mercedes Benz club of Sri Lanka" in association with DIMOs. From the very inception, Diesel and Motor Engineering Company (DIMO), the importer and distributor for Mercedes Benz in Sri Lanka, has been the sponsor of this event. Two years ago marked the 10th anniversary of the Club a programme " A decade of excellence" which was held at the Nuwara Eliya Grand Hotel with a Mercedes Benz Rally commencing from Colombo followed by a prize-giving and a dinner-dance. The last Mercedes Benz pageant held during troubled times in 1999 attracted over 200 "stars" and this year with peace reigning over 300 "stars" were expected. At the moment there are about 100 members of the Club and also on the agenda of the Club are social events and charity programmes and according to Past President Bri Ponnabalam, the club also assists the traffic in maintaining law and order on the streets. |
