Army on massive recruitment drive

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Sri Lanka Army will be launching a massive recruitment drive shortly to recruit 4000 men soldiers. Interviews will commence from Aug 18 in several locations islandwide, and the selection process will continue till the end of the month.

The new recruits will be given a 3 1/2 month training in 15 Army Training Centres in Boossa, Ampara, Panagoda, Diyatalawa, Embilipitiya, Colombo, Saliyapura and Kandy. Brigadier Janmika Liyanage, Director (Personnel Administration) said that there were 10000 vacancies for soldiers at present and these will be filled according to the training facilities available in the centres.

This is the first time the Army is carrying out large scale recruitment after the government signed the MoU with the LTTE. But the training for small groups had taken place earlier. There was a decline in numbers to join the Army during the war, but the Army has observed a slight improvement in the recent past, sources said.

Meanwhile, the Army has postponed the pilot project to issue discharge certificates in the Gampaha district till September, giving priority to the recruitment campaign.
