Namal Rajapakse helps S. Thomas' beat Wesley 13/12

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Number 'eight' Namal Rajapakse was the toast of a Thomian victory when he almost singlehandedly guided his side into the final of the President's Trophy under 19 rugger final. S. Thomas' beat a fancied Wesley outfit by 13 points (two tries and a penalty) to 12 (four penalties) in a semi-final match played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Rajapakse played an exceptionally brilliant role in attack and defence and was responsible scoring twice, sneaking through a wilting Wesley defence. Wesley's points came through four penalties fired over by Yasas Nonis.

The scores were level 3-3 at the 'breather' but Wesley forged ahead through penalties until Rajapakse touched twice to score two unconverted tries.

With the Thomians leading 13-12 during the dying stages of the match Wesley missed a vital penalty. Nonis missed a relatively easy kick and with that Wesley's chances of taking the lead vanished.
