Bronze for Sri Lanka men and women in Sepaktakraw Sri Lanka men's and women's sepaktakraw sides won bronze medals in the Division III and Division II categories respectively at the 18th King's Cup World Sepaktakraw Championships held at Pathaloong, Thailand recently. Last year (2002), too, Sri Lanka won bronze medals. Eighteen countries participated. They were Sri Lanka, india, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Kampuchea, Vietnam, South Korea, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, Pakistan, Canada and Thailand. Six countries (Malaysia, Brunei, Switzerland, Germany, Pakistan, Canada) fielded women's sides only, while the others had men's and women's sides. In the men's event, Sri Lanka beat Switzerland and Germany, while losing to Brazil. In the women's section, Sri Lanka tied with India for the bronze medal while losing to South Korea and Thailand 'B'. The President of the Amateur Sepaktakraw Association of Sri Lanka (ASASL), Nizam Hajireen, who is also the coach and a senior Vice-President of the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASF), said that the average age of the women's side was only 15 years and that the four girls were students of Kanishka Vidyalaya, Maharagama. They were Bhagya Anupama, Sulochana Perera, L.P. Samindra, Sashi Nadeeshani and Ayesha Gunasekera. Among the men, one was from the Royal Institute, one attached to the Magistrates Courts and two who are self employed. They had been in training for the last five months under Hajireen at the CR & FC. Hajireen also attended the International Congress during the same period and was awarded a plaque in recognition of his services to the sport. (L.G.) |
