by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

The 77th Clifford Cup Boxing Championship will get the extra punch as Caltex has agreed to sponsor the event when it gets under way at the gymnasium of the Sri Lanka Military Academy at Diyatalawa The meet is one of the oldest boxing championships in the boxing curriculum and over 100 boxers are expected to participate in this only team championship contest to be held from August 21 to 23.

A press briefing was held at the Caltex House Auditorium regarding to the meet and the secretary of the Amateur Boxing Association Brig. J. Jayasuriya said that this meet is one of the oldest ones in the country, inaugurated in 1927 during the regime of the British, which brought the first gold medal to Sri Lanka when Barney Henricus won his bout in the 1932 Empire Games.

The best boxer at the meet will receive the late captain H. K. Karunaratna trophy. Vajira Abeysinghe, Head of Sales and Marketing said that it was a new sport for Caltex, besides their sponsoring of Seevali Ratnapura recently.

All senior boxers and the boxers who qualified themselves in the recently concluded qualifying meets will compete for honours. Since it's a team championship each team should have minimum of four boxers in different weight classes.

Mr. Kishu Gomes, the Managing Director of Caltex Lubricants Lanka Ltd. will be the chief guest at the finals.
