University of Moratuwa retains overall trophy by LESLIE FERNANDO University of Moratuwa retained the overall trophy with 22 points to University of Colombo's 20 points at the Inter-University Regatta held at the Colombo Rowing Club, Beira Lake yesterday. The crew of Moratuwa won four events while and Colombo took two events including the main boat race 'A' Fours. The University of Moratuwa carried away the inter-university challenge trophy for the second time in succession. They had a clear lead of 22 points until the last two races 'A' and 'B' Fours, winning the men's 'A' and 'B' Sculls, mens 'A' and 'B' Pairs events. However, the determined and dedicated University of Colombo crew showed quality and well disciplined rowing to win both the men's 'A' Fours and men's 'B Four event. In the Main event, the men's 'A' Fours, it was a close tussle with both crews rowing effectively. The University of Colombo crew comprising Udugamasooriya, Wimaladasa, Kottehewa, Lekamarachchi and Kumara rowed with courage to win the event by a whisker with a time of 3.58 secs to opponents time of 3.59 secs. In the Ladies rowing, the University of Colombo came out winners and took away the inter-university challenge trophy. The University of Colombo oarswomen won the Ladies Pairs 'A' and 'B' and the Ladies Fours. Dr. Raj Wijewardena, the Chancellor University of Moratuwa was the chief guest. Men's 'B' Sculls: Yenuka de Silva of University of Moratuwa beat Jauitha Wimaladasa of University of Colombo by 11 secs. (Time: 4.45 secs) |
