Chartered Engineer heads Hydraulic Institute Chartered Civil Engineer Malith Mendis, who assumed duties as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Lanka Hydraulic Institute (LHI) recently, comes with experience and a 20-year service record to serve the company. He has taken over from Dr Ranjith Galappaththi, now a consultant to the LHI. Mendis is a member of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, Society of Structural Engineers Sri Lanka, Institution of Engineers Australia and Institution of Civil Engineering UK. He served Holcim Lanka Ltd, Lankan Group and CECB (Mahaweli) before taking up the new post. He was a student of Royal College, Colombo and graduated as a civil engineer from the University of Liverpool, UK, where he won the Overseas Research Studentship and Maintenance Grant in 1982. He also studied at Ruam Rudee International School in Bangkok. The LHI is a public limited liability company with a shareholding by the Sri Lankan government. It has technical and scientific staff with international experience and training and can produce outputs compatible with the highest international standards. The institute undertakes field and laboratory investigations and offers consultancy services in hydraulic engineering with special emphasis on coastal, port and water resources engineering and expertise in coastal zone management. It has also acquired expertise and experience in environmental impact assessments. Small harbours designed by LHI include the Oluvil Port, the Fisheries Harbours in Kudawella and Hikkaduwa and the anchorage in Panadura. It has rehabilitated major fishing harbours at Puranawella, Beruwala and the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour. These harbours were designed and built at a fraction of the current cost for designing and constructing similar ports. The LHI is presently involved in the initial studies of the Colombo Port South Harbour development project, Coastal Resources Management Project and Kelani River Salinity Barrage project. It was recently involved with the fishery harbour developments, wave and tide studies in the Maldives and coastal protection projects in Brunei. The institute is the Permanent Secretariat and host for the COPEDEC VI-International Conference on Coastal and Port Engineering in Developing Countries, due to be held in Colombo from September 15 to 19.
