Daring to TAUNT

by Umangi de Mel

They hunger for soul shaking, earth shattering and ear splitting music. The majority points finger at them but they don't seem to give a damn..The daring youth comes on stage, taunting the silence.

A bit of `Hybrid' and a bit of `Rattlesnake', two bands that are no more, yet a fine blend of both and `Taunt' came to life on July 11th, this year.

"I was totally new to the scene as I had never played in a band before. Chandu and I met during a gig at `Blizz'," says Dillon....

`Taunt' has Avon on lead guitar, Chandu on bass, Dillon on lead vocals, Ranen on guitar and Roshan on drums.

Chandu says that `Hybrid' wasn't really `happening', "After Michael and Azlan who currently play with `Cold Fusion' left `Hybrid' last year, we started the band brand new in February, this year but things didn't seem to improve with `Hybrid'," says Chandu adding that they wanted to change the outlook of the band starting off with the name.

"`Taunt' doesn't have much story behind it, though. We were to perform at `Blizz' and we still didn't have a proper name. So it was done in a rush with not much choice," they say.

`Taunt' caters to any young crowd that prefers heavy metal and gospel. "We play stuff like `Linkin Park, System of a down, Metallica and Drowning pool," the guys say.

Their first original called `Prolonged Arrogance' which is a basic rock song, is written by a buddy, Anuradha while the music is composed by them and the other three are their own creations, "`Shadows of the spirits', a combination of eastern and western rhythms (raga tune), `Insanity', a heavy metal track and `Sick man's dreams', a rock ballad which is not complete yet," says Dillon.

Not having a fixed venue to perform doesn't seem to bother them much, "We play at `Blizz' often and hope to play at the Rock Company, this month," they say. Having had a blast at `High Echoes' on August 9th, their first gig, the guys say that it was sheer luck that saved them at the beginning of their session. "We were scheduled to start at 7.45 but having finished the sound check early, they wanted us to go ahead and start the show but our guitarist hadn't still turned up," the guys continue nonchalantly, "We played three tracks without him but the show was brilliant, we hadn't practised much but the response was immense. We kinda got the crowd going."

Speaking about the local rock scene which is gathering momentum by the day, the guys say that the industry's far better than it used to be. "Bands keep coming up and it's good to see that their success is based on originality," they say adding that it's good to see bands not wasting their creativity on covers anymore. "Bands like Stigmata, Kreb's Cycle and Independent Square are setting good examples to the young and upcoming bands and the rock scene has thus changed a lot," they comment.

`Taunt' believes in variation in their music, "It's nothing about being able to create tons of originals. Your music has to vary, the beat, the style and the works.. writing our own songs doesn't mean they can sound the same," they say but add, "Nevertheless, more bands mean more competition and that's the way to improve yourselves. We are definitely not amateurs but not professionals either. But we know it's practise and endurance that make you survive," they say.
