SLMC pooh-poohs PA alliance

by P. Krishnaswamy

Senior Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) officials dismissed speculation of a possible alliance with the Opposition PA and said that political differences between the SLMC and the UNP have been sorted out.

SLMC Chairman and Deputy Minister of Housing, Basheer Segu Dawood, told the Sunday Observer that a series of fruitful meetings with the UNP leadership in recent weeks had enabled them to iron out all contentious issues, including chairmanship of the Puttlam UC to the SLMC. It was likely that they would shortly nominate former Chairman A.M. Faiz's brother for the chairmanship, he said.

Dawood also said the party would begin discussions with the UNP to draw up a fresh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

In regard to their demand for Muslims' independent representation in the peace talks, he said that they would not step down from their stand under any circumstances and look forward to the Government's positive response on that.
