Sri Lanka Air Force in final round

Two teams each from India and Sri Lanka Air Force and a team each from Singapore, Holland, Hong Kong and Army entered the final round of the inaugural Confifi International Amateur Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Beruwela Beach yesterday.

The teams would play in a super league from which four teams would be drawn up for the semi finals.

However, it was disappointing to note that exit of formidable teams from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Palm Gardens, Beach Birds from Beruwela which excelled in the first round.

The former Sri Lankan national skipper Janaka Fernando powered the Air Force team to three successive victories over the Indian 'B' team, Holland and the Club Palm Garden team.

The Indian team mainly utilised their height advantage to seal victories in their favour while both the Singaporean and the Hong Kong players experience came in to play for their victories.

In the women's section, it was disappointing to note that only Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Ports Authority had fielded teams while there were two teams from Hong Kong and a team from Singapore. Sri Lanka Air Force and the three foreign teams qualified for the semi finals, which would be 'spiked' off this morning. Over 50 teams including 8 foreign teams from Singapore India, Japan and Holland are participating in this event which is being sponsored by Confifi Group of Hotels and co sponsored by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, Dialog GSM, Newgem Jewellers and Pepsi Cola and SriLankan Airlines are the other sponsors of the event. The men's final and the women's finals are scheduled to be played at 4.30 p.m. today. The winners of the two finals would be awarded 2000 US dollars each while the runners-up teams would be awarded 1500 US dollars each. In addition special merit awards too would be awarded. The event is being organised by Confifi Hotels which the assistance of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation.
