Star attraction athletics will be from Sept 25 to 28

The All-Island School Games 2003 which includes twenty three disciplines including the main attraction athletics, organised and conducted by the Sports Development Department of the Ministry of Education is in full swing.

The first stage of the Games was held on September 6, 7 and 8 at different venues. Over 1,500 boys and girls from 300 schools participated at sixteen centres.

The second stage of the games which began yesterday (Saturday, September 13) will continue today and tomorrow (Sunday and Monday). Nearly 2,500 will participate in eleven disciplines at 18 centres. The events to be worked off are - volleyball, soccer, hockey, softball cricket, tennis, karate, gymnastics, wrestling, bodybuilding contests, cycling and kabaddi.

The special significance of the Games will be the athletic events to be staged from September 25 to 28 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. For this main event, the winners from zonal level and district level will vie for major honours. Over 4,000 athletes, both boys and girls are expected to participate in 99 events in different age categories.

The opening ceremony will be held on September 25 at 8.30 a.m. and Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs will be the chief guest. The closing ceremony will be on September 28 at 3.00 p.m. and Suranimala Rajapakse, Minister of School Education will be the chief guest.

The champions, runners-up and third placed winners at two stages of the Games will be presented the overall trophies on September 28. The overall champions and the runners-up in the 22 sports and the overall champions and runners-up at the four-day athletic championships will be presented challenge shields and challenge trophies.
