Colombo comes into focus again today by LESLIE FERNANDO Most of the events in the second stage of the All-Island School Games 2003 were not worked off at different venues in Colombo as a mark of respect to late Most Ven. Madihe Pannaseeha Maha Nayaka Thera. The Maha Nayaka Thera's cremation was held in Colombo yesterday. The games are conducted by the Sports and Physical Training Section of Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs. Five disciplines - football, hockey, gymnastics, tennis and cycling will be held today and tomorrow. In addition, the Schoolboy Body-building Contest too, will take place today at Sri Suboothi Vidyalaya, Battaramulla. Thirty-six schoolboys will vie for major honours. One hundred and six cyclists (80 boys and 26 girls) will race around Vihara Maha Devi Park starting at 8.00 a.m. opposite the Art Gallery today in the Cycling Championships. The other disciplines, volleyball, softball cricket, karate, wrestling and kabaddi in the second stage of the All-Island School Games were worked off in Mirigama, Panadura, Kiribathgoda, Veyangoda and Piliyandala without any ceremonies on a low key. Volleyball The volleyball tournament is being conducted in three age categories under-15, under-17 and under-19 for both boys and girls and in the preliminary round matches, all fancied teams registered easy victories and gained births to pre-quarter finals at D. S. Senanayake MMV, Mirigama yesterday. The matches will be continued today and tomorrow. |
