Kandy keen to get international status for Rugby Sevens by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr. Kandy Sports Club is keen to get International Rugby Board recognition for its Singer Sri Lanka International Rugby Sevens which has now become an annual feature and is being insisted upon by one of its title sponsors. Secretary General of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) James Scott said that he is satisfied with the infrastructure and accommodation provided in Kandy and they are looking into the possibility of getting IRB Status for this tournament which is a grand spectacle. James Scott also said that the 5th World Cup Sevens will be played in Hongkong in 2005. Before that the qualifying matches will be played in 2004. The Asian Region is eligible to field 4 teams in the World Cup Sevens. ARFU will look into the possibility of playing the qualifying matches during next year's Singer-SriLankan Rugby Sevens concurrently. The Trustee of Kandy SC and Chairman of the UNP Malik Samarawickrema said that they are prepared to receive the IRB recognition for this tournament. They have nothing to worry as Singer Sri Lanka Ltd. have sewn up the sponsorship for this International Sevens for another five years.
