Thuhashini adds Arizona women's stroke-play title to already full bag

by LAL GUNESEKERA

A former Sri Lanka national champion, Thuhashini Selvaratnam, won the Arizona Women's Stroke-Play Golf Championship for the fourth consecutive year at the Quintere Golf and Country Club by 5 shots last Wednesday. It was a 6805 yard course with the US dessert on either side of the fairways and very hilly and challenging Course for a 54 Hole tournament.

Thuhashini with a first-round 75 emerged the leader by 5 strokes after the first day. On the second day, a wayward drive saw her in the cactus - lost ball, and in spite of being 4 over on one hole, recovered well to end the round with a 76 - 4 over, and increase the lead to 7 shots. On the final day, on the 9th hole, her lead was reduced to 3, but steady golf gave her the title and she won by 5 shots.

She was also chosen to represent Arizona State in a Match-Play tournament scheduled to be held in North Carolina in October.

Recently she qualified for the US Public Links Championship with a gross 69 at the Ocean Hammock Golf Course in Florida, but lost in the second-round.

Thuhashini has won the Arizona State Amateur Championship for the third consecutive year and was adjudged the State "Player of the Year" in both 2001 and 2002 and represented Arizona State against Utah State in 2002.

She is presently the Operations Manager of the Arizona State Golf Association and before leaving for the USA, had a splendid season (1999-2000) where she won seven national titles within nine months.

They were the Sri Lanka amateur for third time, Singapore Open Amateur, Hong Kong Open Amateur, China Open Amateur, Thailand Open Amateur, All-India Open Amateur and Emirates Open Amateur, besides winning the Epson Sourjana Open Amateur in Kuala Lumpur and being runner-up at the Malaysian Open Amateur Championship. She also won the RCGC Ladies Championship for the sixth time and Sri Lanka Women's Stroke-Play Championship for the third occasion.
