The first Challenger Cup Indoor Cricket Tourney in Sri Lanka There will be four to five teams that will play in the first-ever World Indoor Cricket Federation WICF Challenger Cup tournament at the Austasia International Indoor Stadium in Thalawathugoda from September 18 to 27. India will have either one or two teams, Pakistan one and U.A.E. two teams. Sri Lanka will not play in this segment as they have already qualified to play in the World Cup tourney to be held here in September 2004. There will be around 10 teams in the World Cup tourney and teams have to qualify from the Challenger Cup tourney to play in the World Cup tourney. The Challenger Cup tourney has been brought about to popularise indoor cricket and it features all non-member countries in the World Indoor Cricket Federation. The Challenger Cup has been structured in a way to provide opportunities for countries that wish to play the game and to be a part of the world indoor cricket events. Though Sri Lanka is not playing in the Challenger Cup, it is a great opportunity for Sri Lanka to host this prestigious tourney as officials of the world body such as Mr. Ross Collims (President of the Australian Indoor Cricket Federation and Head of Technical World Indoor Cricket Federation) and Ms Karen Denman (Secretary General) will be in Sri Lanka to watch the games. Mr. Collins will also conduct a free coaching clinic on Friday, September 19. |
