EDB launches e-market place by Pelham Juriansz Sri Lanka's official gateway to the business world, the website www.srilankabusiness.com, was launched last week amidst a gathering of business leaders and government officials. It is an initiative of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and built by software engineering company, Affno. Chief guest, Prof G.L. Peiris, Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy, Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs, who purchased a packet of tea online with his credit card, said online purchasing is indeed an inspiring experience. E-business helps the small man. This online system will help the entrepreneurial world and add to the well-being of the economy, he said. Dr Lalith Gamage, Managing Director and CEO Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology said online purchasing has come to stay. "Cyber trading can transform your way of life. As a cyber trader, you could communicate through the Internet and e-mail and access a storehouse of trade information," he said. Search and advisory services and advertising are other areas that can benefit people. "Advertising on the Internet has become popular as a large number of potential customers can be reached through this method. You can showcase your products to millions of people across the globe." Among the many benefits the website offers Sri Lankan enterprises are the facility to sell online through an Internet payment gateway provided by HSBC and worldwide delivery via a cost effective delivery mechanism through Capitol Air Express International (Danzas). The EDB plans to promote the portal extensively using online as well as off-line advertising, public relations and through leveraging Sri Lankan missions overseas. The portal has been launched with all the requisite country and sector information. The idea is to sell popular Lankan products and services which have been grouped into 18 sectors from apparels to wood and wooden products. |
