Sujeewa Nilmini wins silver medal for Sri Lanka Bernard Perera reporting from Philippines Manila, Sept. 20 - Sri Lanka's long distance woman runner Sujeewa Nilmini created history winning the first medal for Sri Lanka on day one of the Asian Athletics Championships here today. She also becomes the first Sri Lankan Athlete to win a medal in this event at the Asian Championships since its inception in 1991. Speaking to me after the race she said that this was her first medal outside Sri Lanka and also her first international meet. Sujeewa Nilmini won the silver medal. MANILA, Sept 20 (AFP) - Results at the Asian athletics championships here Saturday: 10,000 metres women (final) 1. Sun Yingjie (Chn) 32 mins 37.04 secs 2. Sujeewa Nilmini Jayasena (Sri Lanka) 34:46.99 3. Aruna Devi (Ind) 37:23.28. Sri Lanka's medal prospect and skipper of the athletic team for the 15th Asian Championships Sriyani Kulawansa qualified to run in the 100m hurdles final today. She ran the first heat Yiping Su of China and was placed second with a time of 13.53 secs. Chinese girl's time being 13.40. Trecia Roberts of Thailand who sent Kulawansa to second place on many occasions had the best time when she clocked 13.10 secs. With two Chinese and Robert having records better times Kulawansa will have to the best today if she is to be among the winners. In the 100 metres, H. Jani Chathurangi de Silva clocked 11.98 secs and was placed third in heat No. 3. Jani will be running in the round two of this event. In the 100 metres hurdles event, Sri Lanka's competitor A. Indika Kumara failed to finish the event. Kumara who went over the first hurdle could not go over the second and third and was completely unbalanced and had a nasty fall on the track. He had to taken off the track with few injuries. W. M. C. Wijekoon was second in the 1500m too qualified to run in the final. Sugath Tillekeratne and Rohan Pradeep Kumara too managed to qualify themselves for the 400 metre final where Sri Lanka can keep hopes alive for more medals. Damayanthi Darsha who suffered a thigh injury, pulled out of her pet event 400 m which also is a loss of a medal for Sri Lanka. Results: Heat 1. 100m Women - 1.
