Hameedia's blows the whistle on fakes Managing Director of Hameedia's, Fouzal Hameed blew the whistle on other leading stores that are displaying and selling Hameedia's branded products. The problem had started about five years ago when the company discovered that there were plenty of Hameedia's branded products in the market. "The reasons for this is that other leading stores are all out to make money at any cost and they want to increase their market share," said Hameed. He said that while this increased profitability and secured a large customer base, it also kills original brands and can wipe out small and medium local industries. "There is vast potential in this industry and if properly tapped with market guarantees of fair play, it can generate many employment opportunities." A fuming Hameed said what irked him most was other top stores in the country displaying their products under different labels, which were very cleverly disguised. "For instance, the reputed brand 'Le Bond' had been changed to 'Ge Bond' and anybody not keen on observing certain flaws could easily be deceived. The so-called "top stores" sell substandard products under brand names like Adidas, Le Bond, Lee and Arrow. Sometimes the label is cut and a new bar code introduced to give the garment its new identity. "Millions of rupees are spent on designing and developing brands. As soon as they enter the market, they are duplicated. This enables stores to offer them to customers at low prices than the originals. (PJ) |
