August tea crop up 16% Tea production during August 2003 totalled 24.1 million kgs as against 20.7 million kgs during the corresponding period last year. This is an increase of 16.6 per cent or 3.45 million kgs. The majority of the increase was recorded from the High Grown elevation, which realised an increase of 1.8 million kgs year on year (46 per cent) followed by Medium Grown, an increase of one million kgs (32.6 per cent) and Low Growns, 0.58 million kgs (4.2 per cent). Interestingly, this is the highest production for the month since 1998. With the significant increase in production during August, the cumulative tea production totalled 201.7 million kgs as against 202.5 million kgs during the corresponding period last year. Except for the Low Grown sector, which recorded a decline of 2.7 million kgs, both High Growns and Medium Growns recorded increases during the cumulative period this year. Although the record crop achieved last year did not appear to be possible at a half-yearly evaluation, it now seems to be an achievable target. |
