Clarification Kataragama Mosque & Shrine The Sunday Observer article of Sunday, 10 August 2003, entitled "Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic Chief Incumbents speak with one voice: Eco-sanctity of Kataragama as Centre of Peace, Unity" contained a statement by me, the Trustee, that could be misinterpreted. The statement, "Trustees who managed this Shrine before me had misused funds given for improving the Shrine," should not be construed to refer to the late former Trustee Al-Haj S.A.M. Thauoos and family, who did great service to the Muslim community. Al-Haj Thauoos was an upstanding man of high moral principles who on every occasion used his position to advance the status of Muslims at Kataragama. As Trustee, I never fail to mention the contribution of Al-Haj Thauoos during the annual Kataragama flag-hoisting and final Thaman ceremonies. I pray that no one may misinterpret my words to cast aspersions upon the good name of Al-Haj Thauoos, and apologise for any misunderstandings. M.H. Abdul Gaffar, Kataragama Mosque and Shrine Trustee, Galle. |
