TNA asks US envoy to lift LTTE ban by S. Selvakumar The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on Thursday pleaded with the United States to reconsider the ban on the LTTE that was further extended last week. In response to the TNA plea, American Ambassador in Colombo Jeff Lunsted said that his country would closely monitor the Tiger's future attitude and take appropriate action when the need arises. A TNA delegation led by TULF General Secretary and Trincomalee District Parliamentarian R. Sampanthan met with Lunsted on Thursday, on an invitation by the latter. The TNA told the envoy that the LTTE is now actively engaged in the peace process and it would be very encouraging to the organisation if the ban is lifted.Sampanthan told the Sunday Observer that the delegation prevailed upon Lunsted that the establishment of an Interim Administration for the North East is imperative since the present peace negotiations would take a long time to arrive at a solution and furthermore the Government does not have a two-third majority in Parliament to form a Federal State. "We told him of the various problems the Tamil speaking people of the North and East are undergoing in resettlement and rebuilding their damaged properties. The security forces are not cooperating in the resettlement even in areas outside the High Security Zone", Sampanthan said. .The talks with the Ambassador were based on three issues. The ban on the LTTE, the establishment of an Interim Administration and the resettlement of displaced Tamil people in the North and East, both within the High Security Zone and outside it. |
