Police ensure calm in Ariyalai Police had to fire tear gas to bring a small mob protest under control in a Jaffna suburb yesterday after a road collision between an Army vehicle and a trishaw that resulted in injuries to a trishaw passenger. The road accident occurred at about 5.30 a.m. yesterday in Ariyalai, Jaffna, and the trishaw was damaged while one passenger reportedly suffered minor injuries, according to sources in Jaffna. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and Army officials had rushed to the scene to probe the incident and an angry mob that had gathered near the scene of the collision had begun pelting the official vehicles with stones. Police reinforcements had subsequently brought the situation under control. Official investigations are proceeding. |
