Seven countries to play in amateur golf C'ship in N'Eliya by LAL GUNASEKERA Four countries have already confirmed and two more are expected to confirm within the next few days to play at the 112th Sri Lanka Open Amateur Championship of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) to be staged at the Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) Course for the first occasion on stroke-play. A spokesman for the SLGU told the Sunday Observer that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Singapore have already confirmed their participation with their top amateurs and that United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar too are expected to do the same. Together with Sri Lanka, seven countries are participating for the first time at the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship, and the SLGU are looking for at least Rs. 1.5 million to host this event in Nuwara-Eliya. He further disclosed that the five-year corporate plan of the SLGU will fall into place before the end of this month (October), while they are yet in the process of finding land for a Driving Range either in Kotte or Battaramulla areas where the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando, has promised full co-operation. Dutch Professional, Henk Stevens, is to make his fourth visit to Sri Lanka courtesy Royal and Ancient (R&A) through the European PGA in January next year (2004) for a period of two months to develop a programme for coaches and also 'work' with the junior and senior national pools, which have not yet being selected. The SLGU spokesman said: "We will pick 10-member squads very soon and we are also planning for more local tournaments next year." The Sri Lanka Junior Amateur Open Championship is scheduled to take place on December 17, 18 and 19 at the Ridgeways of the RCGC, followed by the All-India Junior Open Amateur Championship at Delhi in late December with three players in contention to compete. They are Mithun Nandasena Perera, Binupa Wijesinghe and Sanjay Gunawardene. Age and handicap will count towards the final selections. |
