Four-in-one aquatic meet should produce interesting fare by LESLIE FERNANDO National Swimming and Diving Championships, National Synchronised Swimming Championships, National Waterpole knock-out Tournament conducted by the national Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (NAASU) will be worked from October 30 to November 1 at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool. This is the second occasion that all four branches of aquatic sports events are being held simultaneously. The National Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming Championships and Waterpolo Tournament will be under the rules of NAASU and where inconsistent the rules of the Federation International Nation de Amateur (FINA) will apply. Thirty eight events including six relays will be worked off for both men and women in the swimming championships. Last year, Asian International School and Ladies College carried away major honours, becoming overall and women champions respectively in the swimming championships. Meanwhile, national swimmer Akshayan Rajasingam of AIS stole the limelight when he won 7 gold medals, winning all events he participated. Akshayan also had a hand in all three relays for AIS. It meant he won ten gold medals. He was picked as the best men's swimmer of the championships. Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College who set the solitary record among the goals was the best women's swimmer. All heats and preliminaries will be held during the morning session, commencing at 8.30 am. All finals will be held in the afternoon commencing at 2.30 pm. Those swimmers not reporting at start-up time may be disqualified and no appeals will be allowed. Out of the thirty eight events, eight events will be held as timed finals. 1500 freestyle (men), 800 metres freestyle (women), 200 metres butterfly (men), 200 metres butterfly (women), 400 metres freestyle (men), 400 metres freestyle (women), 400 metres individual medley (men) and 400 metres individual medley (women). Awards of points for swimming (individual) first (10 points), second (7), third (6) fourth (5), fifth (4), sixth (3), seventh (2), eighth (1). Relays: first (20), second (15), third (13), fourth (10), fifth (8), sixth (6), seventh (4), eighth (2). Diving There will be three separate events for diving, one metre and three metre spring board and platform 5 1/2 metre, 7 1/2 metre and 10 metres. All diving events will commence at 11.00 am on each day. Last year Royal College and RCUAC became mens and womens diving champions. Synchronised swimming The synchronised swimming competition will consist of four events, solo, duets, teams and free soutine combination. These events will take place on October 31 and November 1 from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. The draw will be held on October 30 at 4.30 pm. All competitors should perform for about thirty minutes before the winners are found. Points for diving and synchronised swimming will be awarded on the following order first (10 points) second (7) and third (5). Visakha Vidyalaya emerged Synchronised swimming championships last year. Waterpolo The finals of the women's and men's knockout waterpolo tournament will be played on November 1. The women's final will be at 11.00 am and the men's final at 5.00 pm on completion of the final day's swimming events. S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia and Sri Lanka Air Force became men's and women's waterpolo championships last year. The preliminary round matches will be worked off on October 25 at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool. Awards The awards and trophies on offer are-Dudley Senanayake Memorial Challenge Trophy (presented by a swimming enthusiast) Men's Swimming Championships. NAASU Challenge Trophy for Women's Swimming Championships. NAASU Challenge Trophy for Best woman swimmer. Norman Allan Smith Challenge Trophy (presented by Norman A. Smith, resident in Australia) for Men's Diving Championships. NAASU Challenge Trophy for Women's Diving Championships, Andy Vithana Challenge Trophy (presented by Andy Vithana) to National Best Diver. (Men). NAASU Challenge Trophy to National Best Diver (women), Barbara Flamer-Caldera Challenge Trophy (presented by Barbara Flamer Caldera Resident in Australia) to Synchronised Swimming Championships, David Vast Challenge Trophy (presented by Davi Vast, former Secretary Ceylon Amateur Swimming Association) to Men's Waterpolo Knockout Tournament, NAASU Challenge Trophy to Women's Water Polo Tournament. |
