John Amaratunga cycle race on Oct 19

Over 150 riders are expected to participate in the 152-kilometres John Amaratunga Challenge Trophy Open Racing Cycling event to be held on October 19. The Interim Committee of cycling in Sri Lanka together with the Traffic Police and Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha is conducting this event to felicitate the Minister of Interior Affairs John Amaratunga's 25 years in politics.

The cycle race will commence at 6.00 a.m. at the Mahabage Junction and the riders will ride along Wattala, Peliyagoda, Kelaniya, Biyagama, Kirindiwela, Attanagalla, Nittambuwa, Pasyala, Mirigama, Divulapitiya, Koppara Junction, Duwalagaha, Katunayake, Naikande, Minuwangoda, Ekala, Ja-Ela and finish at the Mahabage Junction, covering a distance of 152 kilometres.

So the cyclists will be covering thirteen electorates in the Gampaha District and the race will be only for men - racing.

The champion riders will be presented a motorcycle worth of rupees one lakh, the second place Rs. 15,000, third place Rs. 10,000, fourth Rs. 7,500, fifth Rs. 5,000 and from sixth to tenth Rs. 1,000 each. There will be several other prizes to the first ten winners.

The organising committee appointed for this event is Diluksha de Alwis (Wattala Pradhesiya Sabha), Lal Jayawardena (Secretary to Minister of Interior Affairs), DIG K. P. P. Pathirana (Chairman, Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka), S. A. I. Jafferjee (Secretary), Amal Suriyage (Member), Patrick Hapuarachchi (Member), Nihal Kulasekera (Member), Ms. Vasantha Kahapalaarachchi (Member).

Entries close on October 18 at the DIG Office, Mirihana, Nugegoda. The competitors are requested to send in their entries as early as possible. On the left hand corner of the envelope, it should be marked. "John Amaratunga Challenge Trophy Cycling Championships 2003. The fax number is 2829385.
