Jembo Tennis Oct. 20 to Nov. 2

Two Jembo Futures Men's Tennis Tournaments of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) are to be worked off "back to back" from October 20 to November 2 at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath. The prize money for each tournament is US Dollars 10,000.

A spokesman for the SLTA told the Sunday Observer that the ITF has sent the SLTA about 85 entries so far, but more are expected as entries close on Thursday (October 16).

The tournament in singles and doubles, will see more players from Kazakhastan, Uzbekistan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Chinese Taipei vying for honours. The SLTA is also sending a team of players in the under-12 and under-14 age groups for the Rice Bowl Invitational Junior Championship to be staged in Hong Kong later this month where 12 countries are vying for honours.

The two boys in the under-14 age group are Chavi Thalagala and Rukmal Cooray, while the two girls are Shanki Dandeniya and Amitha Arudpragasam. The two boys in the under-12 age group are T. Dinesh Khanthan and Indika Wettasinghe, while the two girls are Jithmi Jayawickreme and Nilupul Gunasekera. The manager will be K. Subramaniam.

R. D. Y. Pathiraja, who has been coaching these juniors, is unable to accompany the side to Hong Kong as he is to attend an ITF World Wide Coaches Workshop in Portugal from October 21 to 26 together with Shalini de Silva, Jagath Welikala and Seevali Wickremaratchi.

The People's Bank sponsored Inter-Club Championship which is over 50-years-old of the SLTA will be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) on November 29, 30 December 6 and 7 where a tie will consist of two singles and one doubles, while the Mercantile Championship also to be worked off at the NTC is scheduled for November 8, 9, 15 and 16.
