Crime wave pushes up demand for security systems

by Hiran H. Senewiratne

Electronic Security Systems (ESS) providers have claimed an increase in business during the past few months and attributed it to the increasing crime wave.

Many companies revealed that their sales have increased by 25-30 per cent. This included growth in industrial security as well as domestic security.

"This is a growing market, but the level of awareness is still not satisfactory compared to other countries in the region," said an industry expert. Industry sources were of the view that the increasing crime rate in the country and losing confidence in manpower has led to people purchasing such high-tech devices.

Securo-Dynamics (Pvt) Ltd (SDL) claims that it has recorded a 25 per cent sales growth to date.

Sales Manager SDL Peri Emmanuel said offering tailor-made electronic systems to suit all segments and customer groups has resulted in this growth. Red Alert is the most popular electronic system among SDL's products, he said.

As security systems are generally expensive, the company has introduced tailor-made ESS products for domestic use, he added.

Ceylinco-Cisco Sales Manager N. Jeyarajan also said that there is a tremendous increase in sales. He said that during the period January-June, the company sold Rs 35 million worth of equipment, resulting in a 25 per cent growth in business.

Jeyarajan also boasted that Ceylinco-Cisco is the only security agency in Sri Lanka that has a Central Alarm Monitoring Service to follow up active distress signals, which is very popular among many industrialists and even domestic users, due to its 24-hour service.

He said there is a big demand for these ESS from the garment industry. Factories use them not only to provide security for their premises, but also to monitor the performance level of employees.

Sales Manager, Security Systems Department of the Access Group, Lakshman Doraisamy said demand for security equipment is rising than anticipated by the industry.

Burglaries and crimes have increased particularly in the domestic sector due to drug addicts, he said. A court of law's acceptance of electronic evidence is a factor which has increased the ESS business in the country, he said.

A spokesman for the Crime Division Police Headquarters said the country's crime rate has increased by 10 per cent in the past few months.
