Latest venture by RPCL : Rs 35m food court at Union place Richard Pieris and Company Ltd (RPCL) will open one of the biggest food courts in the country at Union Place next month. 'Arpico Super Court', the sophisticated food court with all facilities will be situated opposite the Hyde Park. "This will be the most spacious and up-to-date food court in the country," said Director RPCL, Pravir Samarasinghe. He said RPCL will invest Rs 35 million on the business. The food court will span across one and a half acres of land. According to Samarasinghe, RPCL had invested more than Rs 176 million on the land, which was bought from the Bank of Ceylon in June this year. The property was earlier owned by the Browns Group. The Arpico Super Court will have 30 different food stalls and will be similar to food courts in Singapore and Malaysia. The stalls will conform to all international hygienic standards. "We want to create a convenient place for our customer, with the all under one roof concept," Samarasinghe added. The Food Court will be joined with the Arpico Shopping Centre to enable people to access it from both sides. People can do their shopping, allow their kids to play, have a family meal and get back home. Samarasinghe said the Food Court provides 250 parking slots with security. The company will also extend this concept to other supermarkets in the near future. RPCL presently has three retail supermarkets. Another Arpico Super Court is expected to be set up at Nawinna next year. Food courts have been part and parcel of supermarket and retail centres and is a key attraction in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, Samarasinghe added. RPCL will primarily allocate resources in the coming years to reinforce and develop retailing activities and export-oriented rubber manufacture. The company expects to extend the hypermarket concept at its Hyde Park Corner outlet which will be another leap forward to dominate the increasing supermarket culture in the country. This will further consolidate the company's entry into the food business and give the required critical mass to further dominate the retailing industry. (HS) |
